The crane came down

Just after 8 a.m. Monday, a crane at a construction site in Miami's Brickell neighborhood toppled onto a passing car and set it on fire. Four people were hospitalized.
She reversed out of the fire

A woman driving on the street beside the site watched the crane start to fall, threw the car in reverse and climbed out the back as it burned.
“To be able to see the crane falling, pull the car in reverse and pop out of the back while the car's on fire, really incredible”
Two workers in a box

The crane crushed two empty parked cars and landed on a storage container with two construction workers trapped inside.
Cutting through steel

Crews fought the car fire while a technical rescue team cut through the conex box at the same time. Both trapped workers were pulled out alive.
“It was a very complex scene with a fire that was occurring”
Four victims, minor injuries

The two trapped workers and the operator, who jumped clear as the rig tipped, went to a trauma center. The driver went to a different hospital. All had minor injuries.
“The fact that we had four victims, and they were all able to be extricated or self-extricate themselves with minor injuries is a remarkable day for them.”
Nobody knows why yet

The machine was a piling rig, built on a crane base but designed to drive support columns deep into the ground. Officials have not said what made it fall, and the collapse is under investigation.
