17 new public bathrooms coming

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a one-year pilot with Throne Labs to install 17 modular public bathrooms across NYC, starting this week.
Access by text or tap card
Users can unlock bathrooms via text, QR code, or the Throne app. Tap cards will be distributed to people experiencing homelessness.
High-traffic spots across boroughs
Locations include near Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, Columbus Park in Brooklyn, and Cooper Square in the East Village.
Free with a 10-minute limit

Bathrooms are free, open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and fully touchless. Users get 10 minutes before doors automatically open.
Faster and cheaper to install
Modular toilets install above ground without connecting to sewer lines, making them less expensive and quicker to build than traditional restrooms.
Goal of 2,100 toilets by 2035
The pilot is part of a broader plan to have slightly more than 2,100 public toilets across NYC by 2035.
“Too many New Yorkers know what it's like to have nowhere to go while they're on the go.”
