Applegate reveals misdiagnosis

Christina Applegate, fifty-four, announced Tuesday on the MS-focused podcast MeSsY that she was misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a neurological and autoimmune disorder.

Applegate co-hosts MeSsY with actress Jamie Lynn Sigler, who has been public about her own battle with MS and her ongoing experience with the condition.

What the doctor said

Applegate said her doctor told her, "Congratulations, you don't have MS. Congratulations." She described the news as leaving her feeling like she was back at square one.

“Congratulations, you don't have MS. Congratulations.”

The original diagnosis

Applegate first publicly announced in twenty twenty-one that she had been diagnosed with MS. She spoke to ABC News' Robin Roberts in March about her struggles with the condition.

Symptoms remain unchanged

On the podcast, Applegate revealed she still has every symptom of someone with MS and said the misdiagnosis has left her with more questions than answers about her health.

Misdiagnosis is common

Dr. Marwa Kaisey, an associate professor of neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said nearly one in five people are misdiagnosed with MS due to lack of a single diagnostic test.

Applegate feels lost without diagnosis

Applegate said the misdiagnosis put her in a great depression and left her feeling she let everybody down, having become a poster child for MS alongside Sigler without a clear reason.

“It's weird because I feel like I let everybody down.”
