Democrats demand McMahon's removal

Senate Democrats are calling to impeach Education Secretary Linda McMahon over her efforts to dismantle the agency she leads. She's the second Cabinet secretary facing potential impeachment in two days.

Trump's mandate to shut down education

President Trump campaigned on closing the Department of Education and tasked McMahon, 77, with the job. He signed an executive order charging her with returning educational authority to the states.

Massive staff cuts and office closures

In 18 months, McMahon has fired over 40% of the agency's staff, closed regional divisions, and transferred core responsibilities to other federal departments through interagency agreements.

Senator Alsobrooks: she's harming students

Senator Angela Alsobrooks says McMahon is unlawfully trying to eliminate the department, costing taxpayers untold amounts of money and resources while harming students and federal employees.

“Secretary McMahon is unlawfully trying to eliminate the Department of Education, and in doing so, she's costing taxpayers untold amounts of money and other resources.”

Van Hollen: she should be removed

Senator Chris Van Hollen says McMahon's changes have harmed students and attacked public education. He argues someone dismantling the department has no business leading it.

“Someone who's in the process of doing that has no business being the secretary of Education.”

Cabinet members should be sent packing

Alsobrooks also called for Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to be impeached. She says Trump's Cabinet members should be removed as quickly as possible.

McMahon claims broad legal authority

McMahon argues she has broad authority to move services through interagency agreements, a tool the agency has used over 200 times under multiple administrations.

White House defends her record

The White House says McMahon is successfully returning education to the states, restoring fairness and merit in schools, and putting student needs first.

Former secretaries call for investigation

Former Education Secretaries Arne Duncan, John B. King Jr., and Miguel Cardona, along with the federal employee union, are calling for an inspector general investigation into the mass firings.

Takano: she should resign or be impeached

House Education Committee member Mark Takano says students with disabilities and marginalized students are suffering from mental health grant cuts and civil rights service changes.

“The best thing that Education Secretary Linda McMahon can do for our students is to resign.”

Congress would need 60 votes to close agency

It would take an act of Congress and 60 Senate votes to overcome a Democratic filibuster to shut down the Education Department. Republicans control both chambers and won't entertain impeachment.
