Doctor attacked while sleeping

Officers responded around twelve thirty am Thursday to a home in Edgewood, just outside Pittsburgh, where they found Dr. Idris Evans and his wife suffering from multiple stab wounds.

Wife describes the attack

The wife said they were sleeping in their third-floor bedroom when they awoke to a man in his underwear stabbing them with a kitchen knife, according to the criminal complaint.

Children escape to safety

The couple's two children, ages eight and twelve, were home at the time. The wife yelled for them to flee to a neighbor's house and the children escaped unharmed.

Doctor dies, wife in critical condition

Evans, forty-six, was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead. His wife was hospitalized in critical condition following the attack.

Suspect arrested near the scene

Police apprehended thirty-two-year-old Elijah Hemingway of Pittsburgh after a K nine unit found him behind a nearby house. The wife said her husband addressed the suspect as Elijah during the attack.

Attacker's strange utterances

The wife said the attacker repeatedly made utterances about God and being God, according to the complaint. Authorities described the scene as very violent, with broken bedroom furniture and mirrors.

Suspect's conflicting account

Hemingway told investigators that Dr. Evans invited him to the home. He claimed Evans attacked him with a Michael Myers style knife, but he had no injuries besides his hands, according to the complaint.

Additional charges for prior assault

On Saturday, prosecutors charged Hemingway with rape, robbery and sexual assault in connection with an attack in Wilkinsburg on September twenty-third. Investigators recovered multiple items connecting him to that reported sexual assault.
