Macron meets Trump on energy crisis

French President Emmanuel Macron told ABC News' David Muir his main objective in meeting President Donald Trump on Monday was to find a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and address the escalating global energy crisis.
Iran discovered a strategic card
Macron said when the war started, the Iranian regime discovered they had the ability to close the strait. He said the situation was probably underestimated and must be fixed now.
“the Iranian regime discovered they had this card in their hands”
US must lead on Hormuz, Macron says

When asked if the strait closure was a blind spot for Trump, Macron said he would not blame anyone. He told Muir the United States is the one able to fix this issue and that America is needed.
“I will not here blame anybody. We are where we are. I think the U.S, I mean, your country, is the one able to fix this issue, and we need you.”
France ready to help protect transit
When asked if France would offer its military to help reopen the strait, Macron said he does not want confrontation but France is ready to be more engaged to protect capacities and make transit possible.
“I don't want to engage in a confrontation with any country, but we are ready to be more engaged in order to protect some capacities in order to make this transit possible, yes.”
Macron criticizes regime change by war
Macron criticized the decision to go to war, saying regime change by bombing a country is not feasible. He said it does not work and France made this mistake several times in past decades.
“Having a regime change by bombing a country is not something I think feasible.”
France did not join the war

Responding to Trump's complaints that the US spends hundreds of billions while European allies do not help, Macron said France respects the US and is a good ally but decided not to join the war because it was not the right option.
“when you want to engage people, you strategize with them, and you ask them before launching a war”
Macron rejects Putin's peace claims

When asked if he believed Russian President Vladimir Putin's claim of no aggressive intentions, Macron said no. He said Putin's past claims about wanting peace and not being aggressive toward Europeans are not true.
“I don't buy when President Putin say years ago he wanted peace and make peace. This is not true.”
Macron convinced Trump on Ukraine
Macron told Muir he had a very good discussion with Trump about Russia's war in Ukraine. He said Trump now has a fair assessment that Russia is not delivering, Ukraine is resisting with bravery, and they must help Ukraine.
“Russia is not delivering what they wanted, that Ukraine is resisting with a lot of bravery and innovation, and that we have to help them”
Macron warns Trump on AI risks
Macron said he takes concerns that AI could pose a significant threat to humanity very seriously, unlike Trump who calls AI fears a hoax. He called for global discussion and regulation on the rapidly developing technology.
“This is why we have to make it totally clear and to have visibility, cooperation, and build new regulation on these consequences”
AI rules need global coordination

Macron said AI regulation should not be just the decision of the US government. He called for proper discussion between the US, China, Europe and the rest of the world to deal with AI excesses and risks for economies and national security.
“It should not be just the decision of the U.S. government. It's a necessity to have a proper discussion between [the] U.S., China, Europe, and the rest of the world”
Paris monuments stand on their own

When asked about Trump's proposed Triumphal Arch in Washington inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, Macron said Paris will remain Paris and the Arc de Triomphe will remain the Arc de Triomphe. These monuments are bigger than themselves.
“These monuments are bigger than ourselves.”
