Armed man shot at Nashville courthouse

Officers shot and killed a man inside the Fred D. Thompson Federal Building and Courthouse in Nashville on Thursday after he brandished a gun and knife in the lobby.
Gun jammed at security checkpoint
At around nine thirty am, an unidentified male in his forties from out of state attempted to pass through the checkpoint while armed. His pistol jammed when he tried to fire it.
Suspect pulled knife after gun failed
When his gun jammed, the man pulled out a knife and attempted to attack an officer, who then opened fire. Nashville Metropolitan Police Public Affairs Director Don Aaron described the sequence at a news conference.
Investigation underway into motive

The suspect was transported to hospital critically wounded and later pronounced dead. Police said his motive was under investigation. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will handle the case.
“Obviously, someone who is armed and brings a firearm into a federal courthouse is not acceptable, and we're going to have to get to the bottom of what happened and then act accordingly.”
