The field in Shanksville, 25 years on

ABC returned to the Pennsylvania field where Flight 93 came down, one short segment inside a long day of anniversary coverage.

In brief

ABC returned to the Pennsylvania field where Flight 93 came down, one short segment inside a long day of anniversary coverage. Flight 93 is remembered in a farm field, not a skyline, and keeping that day in view now takes a whole day of separate small acts of remembering. Originally reported by ABC News.

Back to Shanksville

Back to Shanksville

ABC News' Stephanie Ramos reported from Shanksville, Pennsylvania, for the anniversary, with the segment built around the people who died aboard United Airlines Flight 93.

“honoring those who died aboard United Airlines Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001”

The plane that never arrived

Flight 93 is the one that did not reach a city. That is why its ground is farmland in western Pennsylvania instead of a block in a downtown.

One minute, forty three seconds

The whole Flight 93 report runs 1:43. The remembering has to fit inside a news block, between a storm forecast and a story about gas prices.

Twenty five years out

The report is dated September 11, 2026, the quarter century mark. Long enough that most people covering it are working from other people's memories.

Three places, one morning

Shanksville got its own segment, so did hijacked American Airlines Flight 77, alongside coverage from ground zero and the Pentagon. The day is remembered in pieces, by site.

Grief with demands attached

At the New York ceremony, some 9/11 families pressed Trump to hold the Saudis accountable. For those families, the anniversary is still an open case, not a closed one.

The bill that kept arriving

Another segment covers health impacts and security measures at ground zero. The casualty list did not stop on September 11, it kept growing through the people who worked the site.

Now you have to explain it

One piece is aimed at explaining 9/11 to kids, their parents and teachers. An entire classroom of students was born after the towers fell.

What remembering looks like

The last survivor pulled from the rubble speaks out, families gather, Americans turn grief into good. Twenty five years in, the anniversary is less about the attack than about the people still carrying it.

At a glance

Flight 93 is remembered in a farm field, not a skyline, and keeping that day in view now takes a whole day of separate small acts of remembering.
