Trump ad runs on Fox News
The Trump administration ran a thirty-second advertisement on Fox News and Newsmax this week featuring President Donald Trump boasting about his record and vowing the United States will never be a communist country.
Ad labeled as government-funded
The spot is labeled Paid for by the U.S. Government and cost roughly fourteen thousand dollars, according to AdImpact, a media buying and tracking firm.
White House calls it a public service
The White House told ABC News the ad is a public service announcement that is educational and not political, arguing it reminds Americans to love their country and understand what makes it worth defending.
“These public service announcements are about reminding Americans to love their country and understand what makes it worth defending, at home, at our borders, and abroad.”
Democrats accuse administration of illegality
Rep. Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, condemned the ad on X, calling it potential felony criminal theft and a Hatch Act violation for using government resources for political campaign purposes.
“This may be felony criminal theft and conversion of government property for political campaign purposes.”
Ad content boasts Trump's record
The advertisement features Trump saying Together we will defeat communism, socialism and Marxism in America, with on-screen text highlighting Largest Tax Cuts in History, Reigniting American Manufacturing, and Defend Law and Order and Police.
“Together we will defeat communism, socialism and Marxism in America. America will never be a communist country.”
Expert questions legality of spending
Kevin Kosar, author of a Congressional Research Service report on government advertising, told ABC News the advertisement looks like puffery, suggesting it may violate restrictions on using public funds for publicity or propaganda not authorized by Congress.
“This advertisement looks like puffery.”
History of controversial DHS campaign
The Trump administration, specifically the Department of Homeland Security, previously faced criticism for a multimillion-dollar ad campaign featuring then-Secretary Kristi Noem urging self-deportation, with the campaign costing two hundred twenty million dollars in taxpayer funds.
Trump distanced himself from prior ad
When questioned about the Homeland Security campaign, Trump told NBC News in March that he was not thrilled with it, saying he spent less money than that to become president.
“I wasn't thrilled with it. I spent less money than that to become president.”
