Trump attacks Omar after search

President Donald Trump called Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar a terrible person on Tuesday, one day after federal authorities searched her Washington, D.C.-area residence.

Investigation concerns immigration

The investigation into Omar, a sitting member of Congress up for reelection in three weeks, relates to her immigration paperwork, sources told ABC News.

Omar is naturalized citizen

Omar was first elected to the House in twenty eighteen and is the first Somali American in Congress. Born in Somalia, she became a naturalized U.S. citizen in two thousand.

Trump won't say on deportation

Asked whether he wants Omar deported, Trump said he does not take a position on the matter. It is not clear whether deportation is on the table for Omar.

“I don't take a position. I think she's a terrible person. I think she's a terrible congresswoman.”

Omar denies wrongdoing

Omar has denied wrongdoing and has not been charged with a crime. She released a statement saying the search is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement.

“I will not be silenced.”

Trump attacks Somalia at rally

During a rally in Ohio on Monday night, Trump called Omar a disaster and claimed Somali immigrants cheat on everything without providing evidence.

“She comes in from a country without laws, without police, without military, where all they do is shoot each other.”

Vance says no advance notice

Vice President JD Vance told reporters he did not have advance notice of the search. He said the administration tries to let law follow facts rather than prosecute people they dislike.

Johnson calls for patience

Speaker Mike Johnson said the legal system operates independently of politics and judgment should be reserved until the process concludes.

“Maybe the timing's unfortunate for her or others, but this is the legal system, and it operates independently of the political system.”
