Map fight reaches court for third time
Missouri's congressional map dispute returned to the U.S. Supreme Court late Tuesday after a federal appeals court ordered revival of a GOP-friendly map that the justices had twice blocked.
The map reshapes a Democratic district
The new map significantly reshapes a Kansas City-based district held by Democratic Representative Emanuel Cleaver. Republicans hope it could help them win seven of Missouri's eight House seats.
Supreme Court blocked it twice before

The Supreme Court has twice blocked efforts to use the new map in November. The justices left in place a Missouri Supreme Court decision requiring the state to use its previous map.
State court required voter approval
Missouri's Supreme Court ruled that the new districts could not take effect unless voters approved them in a statewide referendum. The U.S. Supreme Court gave supporters until midday Wednesday to respond.
Over a million voters face confusion
The dispute has caused confusion for over a million potential voters who could be shuffled among districts. Absentee voting already is underway in Missouri using districts adopted in twenty twenty-two.
Trump spurred mid-decade redistricting push
Missouri's redistricting battle is the longest and most complex among roughly a dozen states seeking to change House districts. Trump urged Republican-led states to redraw districts last year to gain an edge in the midterm.
