Vance announces mass removal

Vice President JD Vance and Trump administration officials said Tuesday they plan to remove 760,000 Affordable Care Act enrollees from public healthcare exchanges, alleging fraudulent enrollment or non-existence.

Two point two billion in savings

Vance said the discovery and cancelled subsidy payments would result in $2.2 billion in cost savings as part of an administration-wide crackdown on fraud in federal healthcare programs.

“We're actually making sure that the people receiving Obamacare subsidies are actually entitled to receive them.”

Scope of the removals

The cancellation covers approximately 315,000 enrollments representing 760,000 people. Another 419,000 enrollments will receive additional verification to confirm eligibility for benefits.

Broker suspension announced

The Trump administration announced a six-month suspension on new agents or brokers who sign up enrollees for healthcare coverage, saying these officials commit a disproportionate amount of the fraud uncovered.

Context of rising costs

The announcement comes as premiums have skyrocketed for many Americans during Trump's second term. Republicans opposed extending COVID-era subsidies that had helped offset insurance costs, and premiums doubled or tripled for many enrollees.

GAO found fraud risks

The Government Accountability Office conducted covert testing using fictitious ACA applicants in 2024 and 2025. A December report showed the federal marketplace approved subsidized coverage for almost all of the GAO's 24 fake enrollees.

Democrats condemn the move

Richard E. Neal, a Massachusetts Democrat and ranking member of the Ways and Means Committee, said the removals double down on making coverage harder to access after Republicans already created a healthcare crisis.

“As if making coverage harder to access through skyrocketing premiums and more red tape wasn't painful enough, they're doubling down to take it away entirely.”

The bottom line

The Trump administration is removing 760,000 Affordable Care Act enrollees from public healthcare exchanges, alleging fraudulent enrollment and projecting $2.2 billion in cost savings.
