Trump announces Greenland security deal
President Trump said Friday the U.S. has struck an agreement with Denmark giving America permanent control over security in Greenland, addressing U.S. national security concerns.
“we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland”
Months of escalating takeover threats

Trump had repeatedly threatened to take over Greenland citing national security, even refusing to rule out military force. His rhetoric strained ties with European allies and alarmed Greenlanders.
What the agreement actually grants
The deal gives the U.S. permanent access, basing, and overflight rights in Greenland, expanding on a 1951 Defense agreement. It falls short of Trump's earlier demand for complete U.S. control.
“explicitly guarantees the United States the complete ability to do what it deems is necessary in Greenland”
Blocking adversary investments and bases
The agreement bars China and Russia from military bases or sensitive investments in Greenland without U.S. approval. Only the U.S. and allies can invest in sensitive sectors.
“no U.S. adversary can EVER have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval”
Survives Greenland independence

The agreement includes language ensuring it remains in effect even if Greenland becomes fully independent from Denmark, protecting long-term U.S. security interests.
Denmark and Greenland's joint response
Greenland and Denmark issued a joint statement saying they expect to sign the agreement next week at the U.N. General Assembly, subject to parliamentary approval.
Frederiksen emphasizes sovereignty protection
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the agreement strengthens Arctic security while recognizing Denmark's sovereignty and Greenland's right to self-determination.
“An agreement that strengthens our common security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic area and is thus also good for NATO and Europe”
U.S. to expand military presence immediately

Trump said the U.S. will immediately begin developing a large military presence in Greenland. It remains unclear whether the deal amends or supplements the 1951 pact.
Greenland's strategic value to America
Greenland hosts the U.S. Pituffik Space Base, the Pentagon's northernmost installation with about 150 troops. It also holds valuable minerals, oil, and gas reserves.
Trump's Golden Dome anti-missile concept
Trump argues Greenland is vital to his Golden Dome anti-missile defense system and that current U.S. presence is insufficient against Russian or Chinese threats.
Rubio calls it a historic win

Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the deal as historic, saying it permanently guarantees U.S. Arctic security interests at no cost to American taxpayers.
“this historic agreement permanently guarantees U.S. security interests in the Arctic at zero cost to the U.S. taxpayer”
In short
Trump achieved expanded U.S. military rights in Greenland through negotiation rather than the outright acquisition he had threatened, with the deal designed to survive even if Greenland becomes independent.
