Gold Hydrogen plans commercial helium plant
Gold Hydrogen has announced plans for commercial helium production at its Yorke Peninsula site, three months after first extracting the gas at Ramsay 1 near Port Vincent.
First Australian helium in three years
It would be the first helium production in Australia since Santos's Darwin LNG plant exhausted its supply in two thousand twenty-three.
Global shortage after Qatar strikes
A global helium shortage developed after about a third of the world's supply was taken out by Iranian missile strikes on Qatar's Ras Laffan gas plant in March.
Massive reserves at single permit
There is an estimated forty-one billion cubic feet of helium at just one of Gold Hydrogen's seven permits. The world consumes approximately five BCF of helium per year.
Plant expected within eighteen months
A modular helium plant the size of two tennis courts will be constructed on the company's seventy-five thousand square kilometre Yorke Peninsula tenement, creating additional jobs for the region.
“Based on the robust numbers, not of just having the world's best helium purities ever reported, but all our geology and all the economics, we're very confident.”
In short
Gold Hydrogen will build Australia's first helium production plant since 2023 on the Yorke Peninsula within eighteen months, addressing a global shortage.
