A District Court jury found Matthew Stephen Cameron, thirty-three, guilty on Thursday of five counts of sexual touching without consent.
Victims were younger probationary constables
Cameron worked as a constable at Northern Beaches Police Area Command and touched three male colleagues' genitals without consent between December two thousand twenty-one and April two thousand twenty-three.
Jury rejected aggravated charges
The jury found Cameron not guilty of aggravated sexual touching charges, instead convicting him on five alternate counts. The jury failed to reach verdicts on three other counts and one count of sexual assault.
Defence argued acts were consensual
Defence barrister Margaret Cunneen SC told the court Cameron's sexual touching acts were completely and quite enthusiastically consensual and there was no criminality in anything that took place.
“There was no criminality in anything that took place at all.”
Sentencing in December, prosecution deciding on retrial
Cameron remains free on bail until his sentencing hearing in December. The prosecution is deciding whether to pursue another trial on the three counts where the jury failed to reach a verdict.
