Two detained after New Delhi protest
Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das of the Cockroach Janta Party were detained on Tuesday after climbing barricades at Jantar Mantar, a historic protest site in New Delhi.
Five day jail sentence for trespassing
Police said Jantar Mantar is no longer an official protest venue and accused Das and Ranka of trespassing. They will serve five days in jail for the detention.
Voter list removals spark wider anger
The detentions follow a police crackdown aimed at stopping protests demanding the resignation of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over a voter list revision that removed more than one hundred thirty million names.
Fresh protests expected from youth supporters
The detentions risk triggering fresh protests by youth supporters at a time when opposition groups and student bodies are holding almost daily demonstrations against the voter list changes.
“Jantar Mantar belongs to the people of India. We will reclaim it.”
The big picture
India detained two Cockroach Janta Party leaders for five days after they protested at a historic New Delhi site, risking fresh demonstrations as youth anger over voter list removals intensifies.
