Trump announces energy ceasefire

US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine agreed to stop attacking each other's energy infrastructure. The ceasefire took effect immediately.

“Do not break it!”

Zelenskyy says Russia is still striking

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia violated the energy ceasefire by continuing to hit energy infrastructure in Kyiv and Kharkiv despite welcoming Trump's announcement.

“There were Russian violations of the energy ceasefire announced by President Trump.”

Kharkiv attacked on Monday morning

Russian forces attacked an energy facility on the outskirts of Kharkiv on Monday. Drones struck a high-rise building, destroying floors seven through nine and causing an intense fire.

At least twelve wounded in Kharkiv

Local officials said at least twelve people were wounded in several Russian attacks on Kharkiv on Monday morning. The Regional Prosecutor's Office of Kharkiv confirmed the strikes.

Ukraine's strategy: weaponising winter

Russia has used attacks on energy facilities to deny Ukrainian civilians power, heat and running water during the war, hoping to wear down public resistance to Moscow's invasion.

Zelenskyy's condition for compliance

Zelenskyy said Ukraine is ready to stop striking Russian oil refineries if Russia halts attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. He asked Trump to press the Kremlin to agree to this.

“If Russia wants us to stop our long-range strikes against its oil refineries and oil exports, then Russia must stop its strikes against our energy system and critical infrastructure, and stop killing our people.”

Ukraine threatens response if Russia refuses

Zelenskyy said that if Russia does not agree to an energy ceasefire this winter, Ukraine will respond. He made the comments at the Warsaw Security Forum in Poland on Monday.

“This winter, if Russia does not agree to an energy ceasefire, we will respond.”

The big picture

Russia continues striking Ukraine's energy facilities despite US President Donald Trump's claim both countries agreed to an energy ceasefire, Ukrainian officials say.
