Snow falls across NSW alpine region
A strong cold front swept along New South Wales, blanketing parts of the state in snow just weeks before summer. Thredbo dropped to minus five point zero degrees Celsius overnight.
Temperatures plummeted across the state
Sydney hit twenty nine point seven degrees Celsius just after lunch on Saturday, dropping to fourteen degrees Celsius by evening.
Why the sudden cold snap happened
David Crock from the Bureau of Meteorology said heat in northern Australia coupled with a really cold ocean in the south created a strong temperature gradient.
“We've got that really strong temperature gradient between northern Australia and the Southern Ocean.”
Thredbo residents surprised by November snow
Madeleine McVie said the snow was beautiful but unexpected after a warm winter. Snow started falling about four in the afternoon on Saturday and was still falling on Sunday morning at zero degrees Celsius.
“It certainly was hard to get out of bed. It is very cold down here.”
Cold weather to continue across NSW
On Sunday, cooler temperatures between ten and twelve degrees Celsius dominated across the state. Strong southerly winds and hazardous conditions are forecasted along the NSW coast on Monday, with the chill expected to continue.
In short
Snow fell across NSW alpine regions after a strong cold front dropped temperatures by over ten degrees in hours, an unusual but not rare November event driven by heat in northern Australia and cold southern ocean waters.
