Drone strike kills 153 at market

South Sudan accused Sudan of killing one hundred fifty three people in a drone strike on Amiet market in the oil-rich Abyei region on Monday, disputed territory between the two countries.

Death toll likely to rise

Abyei's caretaker minister of information, Yohana Akol Ngor, said some bodies had been burned to ashes and the recovery process was still continuing.

“The fire is still burning, so the recovery process of the dead ones is still continuing. The situation is terrible.”

Sudan's civil war since 2023

Sudan has been in civil war since twenty twenty three, with escalating drone strikes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces increasingly threatening neighbouring countries' security.

Strike hit fuel depot used by RSF

Three diplomatic sources, an aid worker and a conflict expert told Reuters the strike hit a fuel depot in the market that had been used by Sudan's Rapid Support Forces for supplies.

Eight thousand displaced, UN condemns

About eight thousand people were displaced by the attack. The United Nations condemned the strike, which brought the death toll from recent attacks to more than two hundred fifty.

South Sudan summons Sudanese ambassador

South Sudan's foreign ministry summoned the Sudanese ambassador in protest. Medecins Sans Frontieres treated more than twenty wounded, some with burns, at nearby Ameth Bek Hospital.
