Tattoo artist designs Pride guernsey

Sunshine Coast tattoo artist Mady Peters created the Gold Coast Suns' AFLW Pride guernsey with one brief from the team: make it fun and playful.

Rainbow boot and carabiner symbols

The design features a rainbow football boot highlighting LGBTQIA+ community support for women's football, and a carabiner historically associated with the women-loving-women community.

Fruity dolphin holds non-binary flag

AFLW player, Lily Mithen, in SUNS red uniform, guernsey has pride stickers on it, holding a footy, standing in a living room.

Among the light-hearted illustrations is a dolphin holding a non-binary flag. Peters said she believes dolphins are a bit fruity and the design came from a place of joy.

“I believe dolphins are a bit fruity.”

Peters on Pride Round's meaning

Peters said Pride Round stands for celebration and showing up authentically as yourself. She hoped it would help queer people relish and celebrate their identities.

“I think that's everything that the Pride Round kind of stands for, this celebration and to show up authentically and as yourself.”

Players wanted loud, fun, silly design

Gold Coast Suns AFLW players Lily Mithen and Katie Lynch worked with Peters to develop the guernsey. Mithen said they wanted the design to reflect their loud, fun and silly personalities.

“Katie and I are a bit loud and fun and silly and we wanted that to be felt through the jumper.”

LGBTQIA+ woven into AFLW from start

Mithen said the LGBTQIA+ community had been woven into the fabric of the AFLW from the very beginning, with the league always being a place where people felt free to be themselves.

Men's game needs more inclusion work

Julia Chiera, head of AFLW at the AFL Players Association, said meaningful support requires year-round genuine inclusion from clubs and supporters, not just a single Pride Round. The men's competition lacks a dedicated Pride Round.

Suns wear Pride guernsey against Adelaide

The Gold Coast Suns will wear the Pride guernsey against the Adelaide Crows in Adelaide on Saturday afternoon. Peters said she put lucky vibes into the design.

“I knew it was lucky. I put lucky vibes into it.”

The essence

Sunshine Coast tattoo artist Mady Peters designed the Gold Coast Suns' AFLW Pride guernsey with playful symbols celebrating queer joy and self-expression.
