Haftar's parliament approves Turkey deal

Libya's eastern-based parliament, backed by military commander Khalifa Haftar, voted unanimously on Tuesday to approve the two thousand nineteen maritime agreement with Turkey on Mediterranean boundaries.
Reversing a two thousand twenty rejection
The same Tobruk-based House of Representatives had unanimously rejected the deal in two thousand twenty and cut political ties with Ankara. Tuesday's vote reverses both decisions.
Part of a broader strategic shift
The approval builds on military-to-military contacts between Turkey and Haftar's Libyan National Army, including a July deal to develop military facilities and advanced surveillance systems.
Greece condemns the agreement
Greece's Foreign Ministry said the two thousand nineteen memorandum violated international law of the sea and infringed on sovereign rights of states in the region.
Turkey seeks long-term influence in Libya
The eastern pivot is designed to secure Turkey's long-term geopolitical and economic interests, preserving its influence in Libya regardless of future political settlements between government and eastern authorities.
In short
Eastern Libya's Haftar-backed parliament unanimously approved a two thousand nineteen maritime deal with Turkey, reversing a two thousand twenty rejection and marking a strategic realignment in Libya's conflict.
