Discord rolls out age checks today

Discord is launching a system that estimates user ages and requires some to verify they're old enough for age-restricted content. The rollout will take a few days to reach all accounts.
February plan scrapped after privacy revolt
Discord abandoned its original plan to require ID uploads or face scans after users raised privacy concerns, especially following a 2025 hack that stole government IDs from 70,000 users.
New system offers multiple proof options
Instead of just ID or face scans, users can now verify age through credit card, app store data, Google Wallet, or a passkey service. Discord never sees personal details.
“No matter which vendor you use to confirm your age, we won't receive your name, your credit card, your ID, or a scan of your face.”
Automatic age estimation from behavior

Discord's system analyzes account behavior like which servers you join, activity levels, and account age to sort users into adult (18+), teen (13-17), or unconfirmed groups without asking.
Most users won't need to verify
Discord estimates over 90 percent of users won't be asked to confirm their age. Only those placed in teen or unconfirmed groups who want to access adult content need to provide proof.
Teen accounts get safety guardrails
Users aged 13-17 see blurred sensitive images, can't access age-restricted servers, and get alerts about friend requests from strangers. Message requests from non-friends go to a separate inbox.
Vendors delete data immediately

Third-party vendors process age verification but only send Discord an age-group signal. They must delete uploaded data right after confirming age, addressing the previous breach.
Texas forced Discord's hand
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton obtained an injunction in July requiring Discord to offer UK-style age verification to Texas users, setting a precedent for state demands.
Laws expanding worldwide
Discord now faces age verification laws in multiple places including Texas and Brazil. The UK Online Safety Act and similar global regulations are driving the shift.
Privacy advocates warn of surveillance
The Electronic Frontier Foundation argues age verification creates dangerous surveillance and censorship tools that governments use to block content deemed harmful or offensive.
“These systems create dangerous new forms of surveillance, censorship, and exclusion.”
Meta faces similar pressure
Meta agreed to pay up to 18 billion dollars over 10 years and impose default time limits on teen accounts after nearly every US state sued over addictive design practices.
Reddit fined for lax age checks
Reddit started verifying UK user ages in July 2025 but was later fined for not checking aggressively enough. Reddit appealed, arguing stricter checks would violate privacy.
What matters most
Discord's revised age verification uses behavioral patterns and optional proof methods that don't expose personal data to the platform, responding to user concerns about privacy.
