Google's Android laptops arrive October 4

Five new Googlebooks launch with premium hardware and Android apps, starting at $899.

In brief

Five new Googlebooks launch with premium hardware and Android apps, starting at $899. Google is betting Android can compete with Windows and macOS on laptops, but success depends on whether developers create powerful desktop-class apps. Originally reported by Ars Technica.

Google enters the laptop market

Google is launching Googlebooks, Android-powered laptops designed as premium alternatives to Chromebooks. The company has struggled with larger screens but believes Android offers a fresh start.

Five models launching October 4

Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Asus are releasing Googlebooks starting at $899. Preorders begin today, with devices hitting shelves October 4 in the US and October 5 in Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia.

Premium hardware across the board

All Googlebooks feature bright OLED screens, metal builds, and large haptic trackpads. Each model includes an illuminated Glowbar on the lid that currently shows boot status and battery level, with developer APIs coming later.

The cheapest model features a 14-inch 2.8K OLED display, Intel Core Ultra 5/7 processor, 16GB RAM, and weighs 2.7 pounds. It's also the only convertible in the lineup.

Dell XPS Googlebook at $999

Dell's model uses a Snapdragon X Elite chip, 13.4-inch 2.5K IPS display, and weighs just 2.5 pounds. It costs $200 less at Best Buy than through Google's store.

HP and Lenovo at $1,299

HP and Lenovo at $1,299

HP offers a 14-inch OLED model with Snapdragon X Elite. Lenovo's 15-inch OLED model includes both face and fingerprint authentication and uses Intel Core Ultra 5.

Asus Googlebook 14 at $1,299

Asus Googlebook 14 at $1,299

Asus delivers the lightest model at 2.2 pounds with a 14-inch 3K OLED display. It offers Intel Core Ultra 5/7 options and supports 32GB RAM upgrades.

Powerful chips and all-day battery

Googlebooks use either Snapdragon X Elite or Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors with 45 TOPS of on-device AI performance. All models are fanless and deliver up to 14 hours of video playback.

Android apps, not web apps

Unlike Chromebooks, Googlebooks run native Android apps without virtual machine overhead. The Play Store highlights apps optimized for larger displays, and Google says more developers are updating for laptops.

Seamless phone-to-laptop integration

Seamless phone-to-laptop integration

Cast My Apps lets you instantly access Android phone apps on your Googlebook without installing them. Continue On lets you pick up where you left off between devices, though it requires developer support.

Sideloading with verification required

Googlebooks will enforce developer verification for sideloaded apps, similar to Android phones. Only verified developers can have their APK files installed, rolling out broadly next year.

Magic Pointer brings Gemini to your screen

Magic Pointer brings Gemini to your screen

Wiggle your cursor to invoke Gemini AI for tasks like extracting dates from emails, detecting scams, or editing images. Google calls this Magic Pointer, though its practical value remains unclear.

Rambler voice input and AI development

Googlebooks include Rambler, the AI voice tool from Pixel 11 phones that transcribes speech and removes filler words. Antigravity AI agents can handle development tasks, letting you build and deploy apps on the device.

The software gamble

Google's success depends on developers creating powerful desktop-class apps for Android. Phone apps on large screens have historically been clunky, and the selection of optimized games won't match Windows or macOS.

Risky bet on Android ecosystem

Risky bet on Android ecosystem

Googlebooks target premium buyers, but iPhone users have little reason to switch when MacBook Air costs the same and MacBook Neo is cheaper. Android's premium market share is much smaller than Apple's.

Included perks with every purchase

All Googlebooks come with one year of Google AI Pro for expanded Gemini usage and 5TB of Google Drive storage. Every model also includes a year of GeForce Now for game streaming.

Preorders are live today, but no independent reviewers have tested these devices. You'll have to order somewhat blind, as testing units won't be available until launch day October 4.

What matters most

Google is betting Android can compete with Windows and macOS on laptops, but success depends on whether developers create powerful desktop-class apps.
