French AI company Mistral has released Le Chonk, a new one trillion-parameter model available freely to anyone. It is currently in preview with a final version by month end.

Optimized for coding and niche domains

Le Chonk is built to compete with leading general-purpose models but is optimized specifically for coding and cyberdefense, plus manufacturing, finance, electrical engineering and other niches.

Trained from scratch, not distilled

Mistral claims Le Chonk is the most capable open-weight model outside China and trained from scratch, unlike Chinese labs accused by the US of using distillation to close performance gaps.

Mistral's recent momentum

Mistral's recent momentum

In September, Mistral raised three point three billion dollars at a twenty four billion dollar valuation, the largest ever raise by a European tech company. Earnings have reportedly increased twenty-fold in the last year.

US restrictions on AI exports

In June, the Trump administration placed temporary restrictions on distributing models from OpenAI and Anthropic, citing cyberattack concerns. The White House reportedly asked American labs to withhold unreleased models even from the UK's AI Safety Institute.

Europe seeks technological sovereignty

The US government's ability to unilaterally revoke AI access, combined with the EU's push for technological sovereignty, creates an opening for Mistral as a Europe-based alternative to American labs.

Ownership matters more than location

Guillaume Lample, Mistral cofounder and chief scientist, argues that owning a model matters even for US companies. If you use a closed model, he says, there is no guarantee it will still be there tomorrow.

Here's the gist

Mistral released Le Chonk, a freely available trillion-parameter model it claims competes with leading AI systems, as geopolitical tensions over AI access intensify.
