Musk backs SpaceX-Tesla merger
Elon Musk said Tuesday he believes merging SpaceX and Tesla would be a good idea. He made the comments during SpaceX's third-quarter earnings call question-and-answer period.
“Do I think it would be a good idea? Yes”
Shareholders must decide
Musk said the decision ultimately rests with shareholders. Both SpaceX and Tesla have formed special committees of independent directors to discuss merger terms at shareholder request.
“But at the end of the day the shareholders have to be supportive of this.”
AI synergies drive the case

Musk cited superintelligence development, chip design, robotics, orbital data centers, and connectivity as reasons to combine the companies. SpaceX acquired artificial intelligence firm xAI in February.
“There's lots to be gained from cooperating on developing superintelligence software, chip design, the Terafab, obviously robotics, mass to orbit with the Starmind constellation, and connectivity.”
Both companies pivoting to AI
SpaceX plans future revenues from orbital data centers for artificial intelligence computing. Tesla focuses on self-driving cars, robots, and industrial hardware. Both need advanced chips and energy.
Musk gains voting control
Musk holds over eighty-two percent voting power at SpaceX but only about twenty percent at Tesla. A merger would let him acquire majority voting shares at the combined company, depending on valuations and terms.
Regulatory and shareholder hurdles ahead

The merger faces scrutiny from US regulators and political leaders wary of Musk's power. Fifty percent of all Tesla shareholders must approve. Valuation disagreements among Tesla shareholders are expected to be significant.
Here's the gist
Elon Musk said Tuesday he believes merging SpaceX and Tesla would be beneficial, citing synergies in artificial intelligence development, though special committees must negotiate terms and shareholders must approve.
