Nelson warns US losing space race to China

Former NASA chief says Beijing is competing for lunar dominance, not exploration, and America must act fast.

In brief

Former NASA chief says Beijing is competing for lunar dominance, not exploration, and America must act fast. China is pursuing permanent lunar settlement at the South Pole to control resources and set rules for space, while the US risks falling behind without urgent action. Nelson's warning on China's space plans

An older man in a suit smiles.

In a forthcoming memoir, former NASA Administrator Bill Nelson warns that China is pursuing lunar dominance to control the high ground of the 21st century, and the US must act to retain its space leadership.

“Beijing's intended strategy is to dominate the high ground of the twenty-first century.”

The spy balloon wake-up call

In early 2023, NASA helped the US military track a Chinese spy balloon crossing American airspace. Nelson saw the incident as proof that the next great rivalry will be fought in space, not on land or sea.

“The episode was also a window into the new space race that is swiftly approaching its most urgent phase.”

China cannot be trusted as partner

Nelson opposed cooperation with China's space program because it is militarized and secretive. He argues partnership requires transparency and verifiable rules, which China has never provided despite repeated US efforts.

“China is not a partner to be trusted. Partnership requires trust, and trust is founded on transparency.”

The Moon is the flashpoint

The Moon is the flashpoint

Both NASA and China are racing to land humans on the Moon and establish permanent settlements. Nelson writes that America is not the obvious favorite in this competition.

“America is not the obvious favorite.”

China building for permanent occupation

China is not just trying to land on the Moon first. It is building infrastructure for long-term settlement at the South Pole, where the most resources are located, to control this strategic location.

“They are settling in for a marathon, an endurance race that will take us deeper into space than humankind has ever dared to venture before.”

NASA's 2028 lunar landing target

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman is pushing for a 2028 Artemis IV launch to land humans on the Moon. The agency is reevaluating partnerships to ensure it reaches the lunar surface before China does.

Limited parking spots create urgency

Isaacman warned that only a few locations at the lunar South Pole provide the training environment needed for space exploration. China, partnered with Russia, plans to install a nuclear reactor there and could deny this access to the US.

“When you realize there are only limited parking spots that get us access to that training environment, it creates an urgency.”

This is about dominance, not exploration

Nelson argues that China's space program is pursuing dominance and control of orbital infrastructure, similar to how empires once seized trade routes. The outcome will determine who sets the rules for human expansion beyond Earth.

“What looks like exploration on the surface is, in truth, also a raging struggle for space supremacy.”

The main idea

China is pursuing permanent lunar settlement at the South Pole to control resources and set rules for space, while the US risks falling behind without urgent action.
