Windows 11 finally fixes the right-click menu

Microsoft rolls out customizable right-click menus as PC sales plummet 27 percent.

In brief

Microsoft rolls out customizable right-click menus as PC sales plummet 27 percent. Microsoft is letting Windows 11 users customize their right-click menus, addressing years of complaints, as PC revenue falls sharply. Originally reported by Ars Technica.

Microsoft addresses the right-click complaint

Microsoft is rolling out preview update KB5127936 for Windows 11, which lets users customize their right-click menu. Users can toggle commands on or off, rearrange them, and control which third-party extensions appear.

Years of frustration with hidden commands

Windows 11 users have complained that the right-click menu hid familiar command locations behind a top row of icons and moved others under a Show more options submenu, breaking years of muscle memory.

Cloud Rebuild offers cloud-based recovery

The preview also introduces Cloud Rebuild, a recovery option that reinstalls Windows 11 directly from the cloud when an existing installation fails to boot, pulling the image and drivers from Windows Update.

Cloud Rebuild is a fresh install, not a repair

Microsoft classifies Cloud Rebuild as recovery, but it behaves like a fresh Windows install. Existing applications and files will not be included, though users can sanitize entire system drives before reinstalling.

Windows OEM revenue drops 27 percent

Microsoft's quarterly report shows Windows OEM revenue decreased 27 percent, driven by Windows 10 end of support demand, inventory drawdowns, and weaker PC market demand. CFO Amy Hood expects these trends to continue.

“Windows OEM revenue was below expectations and decreased 27% and 28% in constant currency, driven by the Windows 10 end of support demand in the prior year, inventory drawdowns by OEM and channel partners and weaker PC market demand.”

Cloud growth offsets PC decline

While Windows OEM revenue fell, Microsoft's Azure platform jumped 48 percent and Microsoft Cloud revenue rose 30 percent year over year, now roughly 70 percent of the company's 92.3 billion dollar quarterly revenue.
