21 killed as damaged Gaza building collapses on families

Desperate displaced families lived in a war-damaged tower despite warnings it could fall, and it did.

In brief

Desperate displaced families lived in a war-damaged tower despite warnings it could fall, and it did. Around 400 other war-damaged buildings across Gaza are at imminent risk of collapse, particularly as winter approaches. Originally reported by BBC News.

Building collapses, killing 21

A six-storey building in Gaza City's Tal al-Hawa area collapsed overnight, killing at least 21 people including eight children. The building had been tilting dangerously after an Israeli strike over a year ago.

Families lived there out of desperation

About 10 displaced families lived in the unsafe building because they had nowhere else to go. One man whose sister died said they knew it would likely end in tragedy but had no resources.

“This was the last place they could turn to, despite the danger. They were aware that it would likely end in tragedy.”

Rescuers used bare hands

UN and Egyptian teams joined the search for survivors, which was slow due to lack of equipment. Civil Defence rescuers initially had to dig with their bare hands before ending operations with 45 injured taken to hospitals.

“It felt like an earthquake. There was a loud sound and I couldn't stand up.”

400 more buildings at risk

The UN warns approximately 400 other war-damaged buildings across Gaza are at imminent risk of collapse, especially as winter approaches. Rescuers lack oil and spare parts for equipment.

The UN urged Israeli authorities to approve deliveries of heavy machinery for rescue operations and tents for displaced people. Israel says restrictions keep equipment from Palestinian armed groups.

“No-one should have to risk their life simply to find a safe place to shelter.”

An estimated 80% of all structures in Gaza have been destroyed or damaged during the war. About 1.2 million people are currently living in tents or makeshift shelters.

Strikes continue despite ceasefire

The humanitarian situation remains dire despite the ceasefire agreed last October. Israeli air strikes killed at least five Palestinians on Tuesday, including two children and a Hamas commander.

War toll exceeds 73,000

The war began with Hamas's attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, killing 1,200 people. Since then, more than 73,790 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the health ministry.

The takeaway

Around 400 other war-damaged buildings across Gaza are at imminent risk of collapse, particularly as winter approaches.
