Three dead in Kuta

Three dead in Kuta

Police in Bali found the bodies of an Australian man and his two young children inside their bungalow in Kuta, a busy tourist area, on Sunday.

Who they were

Damien John Shaw was 56. His son was six and his daughter was four. Shaw was originally from Fremantle in Western Australia.

A call that raised alarm

Shaw's wife was not in Bali. She had reportedly travelled to Jakarta days earlier, and during a phone call with her husband she heard one of the children crying.

Then silence

She could not reach him again. She phoned a neighbour and asked them to check on the family.

Neighbours forced the door

The neighbour went with other local residents. Nobody answered their knocks, so they broke into the property and found the three victims inside.

Cause still unknown

Australian media reported police were treating it as a suspected murder-suicide, but police told the BBC they have not determined the cause or manner of death. More examinations follow.

“This is a very sad situation; our hearts go out to everyone involved.”

The bottom line

Police have confirmed three deaths in a Kuta bungalow but not yet the cause, so the murder-suicide line in Australian media remains unconfirmed.
