Father admits son's hotel death
Joshua Foster from Essex pleaded guilty to causing the death of his two-year-old son, who fell from the fourth floor of a Cyprus hotel on July 12.
How the boy fell
The child fell through an open window at the King Evelthon Beach Hotel in Chlorakas while his father was holding him around the waist and swinging him side to side.
Plea avoids lengthy trial
Foster's lawyer said he chose to plead guilty to spare his family from reliving the child's death through a long trial. The maximum sentence for the charge is four years in prison.
“The most important thing for him is to return to his family”
Sentencing hearing in October
A further court hearing is scheduled for October 5 when prosecutors will present facts and the defence will argue for mitigation. Foster's lawyer is seeking to lift travel restrictions so he can return to the UK.
Defence argues for leniency
Foster's lawyer described the incident as a momentary lapse without intent to harm, and said the court should consider previous cases where defendants received fines or suspended sentences rather than prison time.
“This was a momentary lapse of attention, without any intention to cause harm”
