DoorDash driver shot by ICE
Venezuelan delivery driver Wilber Rafael Garcés Perez, 28, was shot by immigration agents in Austin on Sunday. The bullet remains lodged in his back.
Bullet still in his back
After being sent to a detention centre, Garcés Perez was unable to move his arm and returned to hospital on Monday. The gunshot fractured his clavicle.
Rough treatment despite injury

His lawyer says detention staff handcuffed, shackled, and handled him roughly despite his gunshot wound. They revoked his communication privileges and moved him to an isolated room.
“He reports that during the transfer he was handcuffed, shackled at the ankles, placed in a waist chain, and handled roughly despite his gunshot injury.”
He had legal status
Texas lawmaker Joaquin Castro says Garcés Perez was in the US legally with work permits and was seeking asylum. His federal case hearing is scheduled for next week.
Austin protests demand answers
Dozens of protesters gathered at the scene on Sunday carrying signs demanding ICE leave Austin. Mayor Kirk Watson called for a full investigation and said residents have a right to know what happened.
“They should know the truth.”
Pattern of deadly ICE shootings

This shooting follows the death of Houston resident Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was shot during an ICE traffic stop despite not being a target of investigation.
Calls for body camera requirement
Congressman Greg Casar demanded an independent investigation and body camera footage. Democrats are pushing for reforms including mandatory body cameras and agents not concealing their faces.
Rare charge against ICE agent
Earlier this month, the Justice Department charged an ICE agent with lying about shooting a Venezuelan migrant in Minnesota. It's a rare instance of federal charges against an immigration officer.
The essence
A Venezuelan DoorDash driver was shot by ICE agents in Austin, returned to hospital with a bullet still lodged in his back, and faced rough treatment in detention despite his injury.
