Three killed in news helicopter crash

NBC Los Angeles photojournalist Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw died when their NewsChopper4 crashed in Chatsworth. An unidentified pedestrian on the ground was also killed.

Covering a deadly bus crash

The helicopter was reporting on a separate fatal accident where an SUV hit a city bus, killing two people and injuring six others.

Fire spread to nearby vehicles

The aircraft crashed between two commercial buildings just before 7pm. Fire spread to four vehicles and two storage containers, requiring over 70 firefighters.

Anchors confirm loss on air

Veteran NBC4 anchor Colleen Williams emotionally confirmed the crash during live coverage after losing contact with the crew.

“We knew it was a news chopper. We knew we'd lost contact with our people out there, and we've just received confirmation.”

News community mourns colleagues

Tributes poured in from the tight-knit helicopter news community. CBS editor Mike Rogers called the victims friends and colleagues, saying hearts are shattered.

“That helicopter community is a small group of people, and it's just devastating to know that this has happened”

NTSB investigating the crash

Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom expressed condolences. The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation into what caused the crash.
