OpenAI shares cyber defence tool

OpenAI will provide Ukraine free access to Daybreak, its AI cyber defence system, to protect civilian infrastructure like hospitals and power plants from cyber-attacks.

Ukraine faces thousands of attacks

According to the Computer Emergency Response Team of Ukraine, the national cyber incident response team, Ukraine recorded nearly six thousand attacks in two thousand twenty-five.

What Daybreak does

What Daybreak does

Daybreak is able to quickly identify weaknesses in digital systems and help develop fixes. Ukraine will also get access to OpenAI's advanced GPT five point six Sol model.

OpenAI's rationale

George Osborne, former UK chancellor and now Head of OpenAI for Countries, said protecting civilian infrastructure means defending it against both physical and digital attacks.

“Protecting civilian infrastructure means defending it against both physical and digital attacks, so people can continue to live, work and access essential services.”

Experts welcome the move

Rafe Pilling, senior director of threat intelligence for Sophos, said Russian offensive cyber operations had been a key component of the Kremlin's aggression since two thousand fourteen.

Tech firms gain from conflict

Tech firms gain from conflict

Jamie MacColl, senior research fellow at RUSI, told the BBC western tech firms support Ukraine partly for altruistic reasons but also because they gain valuable data and intelligence from active conflict.

AI used in attacks too

Anthropic claimed its Claude platform was used by Russian developers to build software for kamikaze drones in Ukraine. AI has also been used in attempts to infiltrate Ukrainian government, military and diplomatic services.

The short version

OpenAI is providing Ukraine free access to its Daybreak AI cyber defence system to protect civilian infrastructure against the thousands of attacks the country faces annually.
