Trump bans three outlets from White House

President Trump announced Friday he was barring CNN, Politico and MS NOW from the White House, accusing them of writing "fiction or lies" about his administration.

“The officer asked me to hand over my badge. He said that it was disabled.”

Reporters' badges disabled Saturday morning

MS NOW reporter Akayla Gardner and a photographer were stopped at the White House gates Saturday when their badges would not scan. CNN and Politico reporters also had their access revoked the same morning.

CNN, Politico and MS NOW all said the ban violates their constitutional rights to free speech and freedom of the press. MS NOW said the White House "belongs to the American people" and is funded by tax dollars.

“we have a right under the US Constitution to do our reporting without hindrance or interference from the government”

Trump hints more outlets could be banned

Trump said "there may be others to join them" but has not issued additional bans. When asked which outlets, he named the New York Times and Washington Post as "fake news."

Press groups call ban unconstitutional

The White House Correspondents' Association and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press both said the ban violates the First Amendment. Legal experts expect courts to strike it down quickly.

“The First Amendment is clear that once the White House invites in some journalists, it can't ban others because it doesn't like their reporting.”
