From Rangers to Sevilla's big stage

From Rangers to Sevilla's big stage

Robbie Ure, 22, played 90 minutes for Sevilla against Barcelona this weekend, facing World Cup winners Pau Cubarsi and Rodri. The Scottish striker is now uncapped but hoping to debut for Scotland against Slovenia.

The Rangers boy who had to leave

Ure left Rangers as a teenager after just two minutes of senior football. He felt he wasn't ready to compete at that level and needed a fresh start elsewhere to develop properly.

“I felt like I wasn't good enough to play for Rangers at the time, which is normal for many 18-year-olds.”

Belgium was the first step

After Rangers, Ure moved to Anderlecht in Belgium to get regular playing time. It was the change of scenery he needed to rebuild his confidence and start his development.

Sweden is where it clicked

At IK Sirius in Sweden, Ure scored 11 goals in 30 games in 2025-26. Between April and July this year, he scored 15 goals in 14 games, including four in one match.

“I was scoring near enough every game, so that was probably the happiest I've been.”

The four-goal game changed everything

Ure scored four goals against Mjallby, his first hat-trick. He felt unstoppable and that performance caught the attention of bigger clubs, leading to Sevilla's interest.

“Every time I shot it was going to be a goal. I've not had a feeling like that before in football.”

Sevilla paid 8 million for him

Sevilla signed Ure for 5.5 million pounds plus 2.5 million in add-ons. He's now training and playing alongside World Cup winners in La Liga's elite competition.

No goals yet, but an education

Ure hasn't scored for Sevilla yet, but he's learning from elite players like Raphinha and Lamine Yamal. He views this as a critical part of his development at a higher level.

“Against these players, you give them one chance and most of the time it's a goal.”

Scotland's fresh striker options

With Lyndon Dykes, George Hirst, Che Adams, Lawrence Shankland and Ross Stewart all unavailable, Ure joins James Wilson, Kieron Bowie and Oli McBurnie in Scotland's squad for the Slovenia Nations League match.

A lesson in player development

Ure's journey shows why young players need patience and playing time at the right level. Scottish clubs should learn from his success abroad that sometimes letting talented teenagers leave is the best thing for their careers.

“You have to give players patience and give them time to develop but the way to do that is playing minutes at a level where you can develop.”

The big picture

Young players sometimes need to leave their boyhood clubs to develop properly, and Ure's journey shows how the right opportunity abroad can transform a career.
