Bad Taste: From Live Debut to Cinematic Pop Anthem
Freya Skye transforms her vulnerable debut performance into a playful studio track and mini-movie music video.
In brief
Freya Skye transforms her vulnerable debut performance into a playful studio track and mini-movie music video. Fan demand and live energy shaped how Skye recorded and released Bad Taste, prioritizing authentic performance over studio perfection. Originally reported by Billboard.
Vulnerable debut in New York
Freya Skye performed unreleased Bad Taste at her first headlining show in December 2025 with just her guitarist Donnie, feeling terrified and exposed.
“It was my first ever headline show I'd ever done, and I was in New York … It was quite exposed and vulnerable.”
The crowd changed everything
By the final chorus, the audience was singing along, convincing Skye the song had to be released. She went from uncertain to committed in that moment.
“If I was ever on the fence of releasing it, which honestly I was before I had performed it, it was in that moment I was like, 'Oh, well, this has to be a thing.'”
Fans demanded the missing track

When Skye's Stardust EP dropped in February without Bad Taste, disappointed fans made their disappointment clear, pushing the song toward an official release.
“I saw my fans' reaction, how they were like, 'Oh, we're so excited, but where's "Bad Taste"?'”
Studio version proved tricky
Skye struggled translating the live energy to a recorded track, discovering that what works on stage doesn't always transfer to studio recordings.
“Sometimes some things sound great live, but there's an energy and an electricity in it that you can't replicate on a recorded version.”
Bringing the live show indoors
Skye asked her team to capture the live arrangement in the studio, singing the song top to bottom while jumping around and ad-libbing instead of recording individual lines.
Energy over perfection
Skye prioritized the raw energy and life in her performance over technical perfection, believing that authenticity matters more than flawless vocals.
“I think the energy over a 'perfection' or 'on paper' vocal [makes it] uninteresting.”
A playful departure for Skye

Bad Taste marks Skye's first venture into sarcasm and humor, letting her laugh at herself instead of maintaining the serious tone of her earlier work.
“'Bad Taste' is the first time I was a bit less serious.”
Mini movie with a story
The music video functions as a cinematic short film with characters, continuity and details designed to reward multiple viewings, featuring a memorable food fight scene in the desert.
“I love something that takes you on a journey and gives you a story that you can add up with the song.”
Closing the Stardust chapter
Bad Taste serves as the final punctuation mark on the Stardust era rather than a preview of Skye's next album, marking a goodbye before her next creative shift.
“'Bad Taste' is 'more like a goodbye to the Stars Align chapter.'”
Tour expansion and new projects
Skye is extending the Stars Align Tour to Latin America and Asia in 2027, while also returning as Nova in Disney's Zombies 5 next summer.
An elevated next chapter
Skye hints her upcoming work will feel more elevated than before, signaling a creative evolution while Bad Taste excites fans for what comes next.
“I think that's going to be more, not drastic, but I do think it will feel more elevated than anything before.”
The big picture
Fan demand and live energy shaped how Skye recorded and released Bad Taste, prioritizing authentic performance over studio perfection.
