A top transfer is sidelined

Lamar Washington, one of Boise State's best portal additions for 2026-27, has temporarily lost his eligibility. He was expected to be a centerpiece of the roster.

The court hit pause

The Georgia Court of Appeals stayed an injunction that had granted a group of athletes a fifth year. An emergency motion for reconsideration was filed Thursday.

The class of 2022 problem

The NCAA's five-for-five rule, approved in June, did not grandfather in 2022 high school grads who already played four seasons. Many have sued to get a fifth year.

“The NCAA's five-for-five rule did not grandfather class of 2022 graduates into the new five-year eligibility plan”

Four schools, one player

Georgia Tech's Lamar Washington talks to head coach Damon Stoudamire.

The 6-foot-4 Portland native has suited up for Texas Tech, Pacific and Georgia Tech. At Georgia Tech he averaged 9.6 points, 5.1 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 1.5 steals.

He was a real recruit

Washington was the No. 98 player in the 2022 composite, Oregon Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior, and picked Texas Tech over offers that included Boise State.

His best year was at Pacific

In 2024-25 he put up 13.5 points, 5.8 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 1.7 steals. Then he moved to a Georgia Tech team that went 11-20 and fired coach Damon Stoudamire.

Boise State lost everyone

The Broncos went 20-12 and missed the NCAA Tournament again. All five starters are gone, with four transferring to Power Four schools like Alabama and West Virginia.

Why the ruling matters

If Washington is cleared, he steps straight into a major role on a team starting over. If he is not, Boise State is rebuilding without the player it built around.

“Washington is expected to have a major role for a Boise State team that is replacing all five starters”

What to remember

Washington's 2026-27 season now depends on a courtroom, not a coaching staff, and Boise State has no obvious backup plan with all five starters gone.
