AI bosses agree: slow the frontier down
A former Anthropic engineer's warning about AI armageddon pushed rival lab chiefs into rare public agreement on hitting the brakes.
In brief
A former Anthropic engineer's warning about AI armageddon pushed rival lab chiefs into rare public agreement on hitting the brakes. The heads of every major American AI lab now say a slowdown is needed, but nobody has said what a slowdown actually looks like, and China is not in the conversation. Originally reported…
Rivals agree for once
It took talk of species annihilation, but the leaders of the top AI labs landed on a shared position over one weekend. They agree a slowdown is needed.
“It took the possibility of species annihilation, but AI leaders did something remarkable this weekend: They reached a consensus.”
One engineer lit the fuse
Jacob Coxon, formerly of Anthropic, warned of a looming AI armageddon. His warning caught fire with techies and politicians at the same time.
The deal happened on X
There was no summit and no treaty. The tentative agreement came together largely through posts on X, which is how much of this industry now negotiates in public.
Amodei made the case
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay Saturday called "We must pace the frontier," arguing that buying time only counts if the time gets used.
“The stakes are too high for pacing to be an empty exercise, we need to use the time it gives us wisely”
Altman, Musk, Hassabis sign on
Sam Altman agreed in an X post the same day, having made similar calls before. Elon Musk backed it too, and Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis supported Amodei's proposals.
Two holes in the plan
Nobody has explained the mechanics of an actual slowdown, and China has not weighed in. That leaves an inflection point with consequences from your phone's chatbot to global politics.
The takeaway
The heads of every major American AI lab now say a slowdown is needed, but nobody has said what a slowdown actually looks like, and China is not in the conversation.
