New Airo trains replace older Cascades fleet

Amtrak announced a new line of trainsets called Airo in late September, replacing its existing Cascades trains.

Modern design transforms the cabin

Modern design transforms the cabin

The sleek, modern design inside the train cabins creates a calm atmosphere with plenty of light reflecting off gray walls and the smell of new leather, a stark contrast to older Cascades trains previously used…

Storage and bike-friendly features

Coach seating offers ample storage with racks that can be pushed up for bike storage. The Airo train also has a dedicated cab car with storage, helping keep aisles clear of bags and carry-ons.

Ergonomic seating improves comfort

The new Airo seats are ergonomic with cushioned headrests, providing far more support during the nearly three-hour ride. Passengers need not switch positions as much, allowing for peaceful rest.

Water stations and touchless doors

Elkay water bottle-refilling stations replace tiny water faucets on older trains, a major upgrade for long journeys. Touchless controls on doors, including bathrooms, help make the train feel cleaner.

Updated menu with local sourcing

The Cascades Cafe menu was updated in June to include locally sourced products from across the Pacific Northwest. Self-service refrigerators and grab-and-go options make purchasing quick and easy.

Missing real-time location tracking

Modern screens throughout the cabin do not display the train's location or estimated arrival time, leaving passengers uncertain about when they will reach their destination. Passengers must ask crew members for this information.

Amtrak exploring live location updates

An Amtrak spokesperson said onboard screens and audio announcements tell customers when trains approach and arrive at stations.

“Live arrival and location updates are an amenity it is exploring, but the trains don't have a real-time data connection needed for the capability.”

Overall positive despite missing feature

The Airo train debuted on the Pacific Northwest Cascades route on September thirty. Despite the lack of real-time arrival information, passengers feel more comfortable aboard the new trains thanks to ergonomic seating and cleanliness improvements.
