Anthropic picks Nasdaq for its IPO
A $2 trillion listing lands at Nasdaq, and the exchange war for AI companies just got louder.
In brief
A $2 trillion listing lands at Nasdaq, and the exchange war for AI companies just got louder. The exchange choice is mostly a branding win for Nasdaq. What actually matters is that Anthropic is going public while its own people warn about extinction risk. Originally reported by Business Insider.
Anthropic chose Nasdaq
A person familiar with the plans says Anthropic picked Nasdaq for its potential listing, with October as the target month.
Two trillion dollar rumor
Some estimates put Anthropic at $2 trillion, though nothing is finalized. For scale, Nasdaq also won SpaceX this year at a $1.75 trillion valuation.
Why exchanges fought for it
Tech listings have been scarce for years, so two record-sized IPOs carry outsized weight. Both exchanges want to be known as the home for AI companies going public.
“Both hope to be seen as the home for future AI IPOs.”
Altman would not list now
OpenAI's Sam Altman says he wouldn't take his company public in the current climate, pointing at the fight over existential AI risk.
A viral extinction warning
Last week a former Anthropic employee tweeted a warning that human extinction risk from AI runs above 10%. It spread fast and sharpened the scrutiny.
“warning of a greater than 10% human extinction risk”
The pick barely moves the stock
No clear evidence says companies trade better on one exchange. The real difference is opening-price mechanics, and Nasdaq's broke during Facebook's 2012 debut.
“There isn't a definitive answer on whether companies perform better on one exchange versus another.”
The headline
The exchange choice is mostly a branding win for Nasdaq. What actually matters is that Anthropic is going public while its own people warn about extinction risk.
