ChatGPT fixed my wife's Zoom calls

A writer used ChatGPT to terminate an ethernet cable and boost his wife's internet speed from 100 Mbps to 850 Mbps.

In brief

A writer used ChatGPT to terminate an ethernet cable and boost his wife's internet speed from 100 Mbps to 850 Mbps. Alistair Barr used ChatGPT to diagnose and fix his wife's dropping Zoom calls by terminating an ethernet cable, raising her connection speed to around eight hundred fifty Mbps. Originally reported by…

The problem: dropping calls

Alistair Barr's wife's Zoom calls kept dropping during important meetings. He found an old Cat 6 ethernet cable to hardwire her laptop, but it had a raw, cut end with no connector.

ChatGPT walks him through it

Barr asked ChatGPT how to terminate the cable. It told him which tools to buy, how to strip the cable, arrange the eight tiny wires in the right order, and drew diagrams when words weren't enough.

First attempt falls short

His first attempt delivered only about one hundred Mbps instead of their one Gbps connection. ChatGPT guessed two wires were faulty, suggested a cable tester, and interpreted the flashing lights from a photo.

Problem solved

Barr cut the connector off and started again with a simpler plug ChatGPT recommended. The result was around eight hundred fifty Mbps. Her video calls have been perfect since.

“Without ChatGPT, there's no chance I'd have pulled this off.”

In short
