Power failure hits Google's London zone

Google Cloud said a power event at its europe-west two b zone in London caused widespread outages on Tuesday morning affecting multiple online services.

Banking apps go down across the UK

Revolut, Halifax and Emma reported service disruptions on Tuesday that coincided with the Google Cloud outage. Users reported they could not make payments, log in or transfer money.

Revolut confirms Google Cloud caused outage

Revolut said all customer money and data were safe and apologised for the disruption. A person familiar with the matter confirmed the outage was due to Google Cloud.

“We can confirm that all our customers' money and data are safe.”

Other services affected beyond banking

The outage also hit delivery service DPD, web hosting platform SiteGround and the UK's courts and tribunal service, which experienced issues with cloud based video tools for remote hearings.

Google says most customers back online

Google said at around ten am ET on Tuesday that the problem had been mitigated for the most part, with a very small number of customers still experiencing issues.

Outage highlights cloud reliability risks

The incident comes as Google competes with Amazon and Microsoft for enterprise customers. Reliability is a big promise in these deals, as outages can have costly consequences.
