Microsoft claims model beats OpenAI
Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, told employees Thursday that the company's new model outperforms OpenAI's offering that powers GPT-5.6.
Using a quarter of the computing power
Suleyman said Microsoft used one-quarter of the compute that OpenAI used to train their model, potentially saving significant money on expensive computing resources.
“We now have a stronger pre-trained base model than the model that currently powers GPT 5.6 Sol. And in fact, we used one-quarter of the compute that OpenAI used to train their model.”
The new model is MAI-Base-2
Microsoft announced MAI-Base-2 on Thursday. Suleyman said the model performed better than OpenAI models on tests measuring how well AI understands and predicts patterns in information.
Also more efficient than DeepSeek
Suleyman said Microsoft's model used twelve times less computation than DeepSeek's offering for compute efficiency, comparing it to DeepSeek-V4-Pro-Base.
Microsoft distances itself from OpenAI
The comments signal Microsoft's effort to branch out from OpenAI despite billions in investment and a major partnership. Microsoft declined to comment and OpenAI did not respond.
