OpenAI headquarters

OpenAI discovered a sophisticated recording device hidden in one of its offices and reported the matter to the FBI on Tuesday.

AI models identified the culprit

OpenAI used its own AI models to identify that a specific employee had planted the device a few days earlier.

“We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier.”

Employee arrested and charged

The employee is 35-year-old Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi national. He was arrested on October 9 and charged with using an electronic device to intercept oral communications.

An employee found a USB device concealed in toilet paper on the back of a television in an executive conference room. The device contained a camera sensor, digital microphone, and microSD storage.

Highly sensitive information at risk

Meetings in the executive conference room frequently involved discussions of highly confidential technical, commercial, and strategic information, including proprietary research, product plans, and business-development opportunities.

Suspect researched building and devices

Prosecutors allege Alfozan used a productivity tool to inquire about OpenAI's building addresses and meeting rooms, and used a chatbot account to submit prompts related to hiding an audio recording device.

No access to critical systems

OpenAI found no evidence that Alfozan improperly accessed or manipulated model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was fired.

Evidence of planned additional devices

OpenAI has evidence that Alfozan intended to plant more recording devices throughout its offices. The company says the case shows how AI can help address sophisticated security threats.
