OpenAI backs new data center rules
OpenAI has backed a new set of measures aimed at giving communities greater say in data center development, according to a policy announcement shared with POLITICO.
What the framework requires
State utility providers should require large electricity customers to cover grid costs and protect other customers if projects fail. Providers can throttle power during high demand periods.
Public reporting and transparency
Developers would face public reporting requirements for facilities' water and energy usage, noise and job openings. The framework would narrow circumstances where developers can require nondisclosure agreements.
OpenAI's community commitments
OpenAI pledged to pay full energy and infrastructure costs, prioritize closed-loop cooling systems, work with local unions on hiring, and invest in community improvement projects residents choose.
The takeaway
OpenAI has proposed a policy framework for data centers that requires developers to cover grid costs, report energy and water usage publicly, and limits nondisclosure agreements.
