Trump bans three outlets immediately
President Trump announced Friday he is banning MS NOW, CNN, and Politico from the White House effective immediately, citing their reporting on him.
Trump accuses outlets of fiction
On Truth Social, Trump said media outlets should not write or report fiction and lies about the president. He promised more outlets would follow.
“Media Outlets shouldn't be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they're covering the President of the United States.”
CNN defends its reporting
CNN said its reporters remained in their White House workspace and stated the ban would be an illegal assault on their constitutional right to report.
“CNN stands fully behind our White House team and their fair and accurate reporting. We have a right under the U.S. Constitution to do that reporting without hindrance or interference from the government.”
Trump says outlets write negative news
Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump said he banned the outlets because of cumulative negative stories designed to diminish Republicans.
“They purposely write negative news. They do that because they want to try and diminish the Republicans.”
Pattern of press restrictions
The ban follows earlier Trump administration restrictions on reporters, including barring Associated Press from the Oval Office and replacing legacy outlets at the Pentagon.
Outlets silent as story develops
MS NOW and Politico did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The story is breaking and will be updated as it develops.
