Ukraine reveals new interceptor drone
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted footage on Saturday showing a new delta-wing interceptor drone that was successfully deployed by the Security Service of Ukraine in combat operations.
Turbojet engine marks design shift
The interceptor uses a turbojet engine to reach higher speeds, departing from the bullet-shaped quadcopters that have dominated Ukrainian interceptor designs until now.
Target is a Geran-5 drone
The interceptor was designed to counter the Geran-5, one of Russia's most advanced attack drones that can fly at speeds of up to three hundred seventy-three miles per hour with a two hundred pound explosive warhead.
Two successful kills confirmed
On Sunday, the SBU posted a clip of a separate takedown, saying it had successfully used the interceptor to destroy a second Geran-5 drone in combat operations.
Response to faster Russian threats
Russia's growing use of jet-powered drones flying much faster than earlier models forced Kyiv to develop new solutions beyond the small quadcopters that initially dominated Ukrainian interceptor designs.
Multiple companies racing to compete
In August, Zelenskyy said authorities were working with four companies designing interceptor drones. Ukraine's defense ministry unveiled the Alexa Spatium turbojet interceptor, and Wild Hornets' Sting S also destroyed a Geran-5.
The key point
Ukraine has revealed a new jet-powered interceptor drone that has successfully destroyed Russian Geran-5 drones, marking a shift toward faster defenses against advanced Russian aerial threats.
