House votes unanimously on contempt
The House passed a measure by unanimous consent to hold billionaire investor Leon Black in contempt of Congress for defying subpoenas in the Epstein investigation.
Black ignored two subpoenas
Black failed to appear before the House Oversight Committee on September 3rd and refused to produce nondisclosure agreements. He also left a voluntary interview in June.
Black employed Epstein as adviser
The Apollo Global Management co-founder paid Epstein large sums for wealth management and tax planning services starting in 2013, and allegedly confided in him about personal matters.
Black claims he didn't know crimes
Black's legal team says he was unaware of Epstein's crimes and that Epstein had no involvement with any NDAs. Black has said he regrets employing the financier.
“No one is above the law. Leon Black defied two subpoenas, and the U.S. House of Representatives acted swiftly to find him in contempt of Congress.”
Black's lawyers call vote outrageous
Black's attorneys argue the House rushed the inquiry and demanded information that doesn't exist, including NDAs from his entire 50-year career and people he never met.
“The Committee has continued to insist on looking for information that does not exist.”
Case heads to Justice Department
The contempt finding now goes to federal prosecutors for possible criminal charges against Black for his refusal to comply with congressional subpoenas.
The takeaway
Leon Black refused to comply with congressional subpoenas about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and is now formally held in contempt, sending the matter to prosecutors.
