Bus rolling with doors open
Ebro Ahmed, twenty-seven, noticed a Battle Creek Middle School bus rolling down a Saint Paul street at about ten miles per hour on Monday afternoon with its doors wide open and lights flashing.
Ahmed jumps onto moving bus
Ahmed sprinted from the sidewalk and jumped onto the moving bus after realizing the driver was having a medical emergency. He had never been behind the wheel of a bus before.
“I saw the bus driver obviously having a medical emergency. All I looked at was the gear control and I was trying to put it into park.”
Ahmed brings bus under control
Ahmed briefly confused reverse and park, accidentally putting the bus into reverse before throwing it into neutral and pulling the parking brake. Nineteen students were aboard. None were hurt.
Grey's Anatomy inspired calm response
Ahmed credited his favorite television show, Grey's Anatomy, for inspiring him to stay calm during the emergency. He said doctors on the show never panic, so he knew to think everything through.
“In 'Grey's Anatomy,' you never see doctors panic. I know it is all acting and stuff, so I just knew to be calm and just think everything through.”
