Trump pardons two Alaska mechanics
President Trump granted onstage pardons to Zachary Czubak and Patrick Fleming during a rally in Wasilla on Tuesday. Both men had pleaded guilty to violating the Clean Air Act.
What the men were convicted of
Czubak, Fleming and Michael Hanzuk owned Arm Rippin Toys, an auto shop specializing in diesel vehicles.
Original sentences and charges
All three men pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate the Clean Air Act in two thousand twenty two. Each received five years of probation, sixty six thousand dollars in fines and community service.
Trump's criticism of the charges
Trump said the men were wrongly charged and cast the prosecution as an example of how the Biden-era Justice Department viciously targeted the Alaskan way of life.
“Think of it: They want to put them in jail for 10 years because they fixed an engine. How sick?”
Third owner also pardoned
Trump said he was taking care of a third person without naming him. Michael Hanzuk, the third co-owner of Arm Rippin Toys, received a pardon last month.
Biden administration's position
During the Biden administration, officials warned that cutting out emissions controls results in a massive increase in air pollution from even a single vehicle. The Trump administration has since relaxed environmental regulations.
